Zhongxing New Village in Nantou

Zhongxing New Village (中興新村 Zhōngxìng xīncūn) is part of Nantou City – the nice part! I say the nice part, because Nantou City itself, the older part (downtown) is just not the most appealing place on the island. I’m not suggesting you shouldn’t go. All I’m saying is to make sure to check out Zhongxing New Village if you’re in the area, as it’s a super cool place!

中興新村南投
The city planning was very well though out. There are nice, wide sidewalks all around Zhongxing New Village. It’s a great place to take an afternoon stroll.

Things to Do in Zhongxing New Village

Actually, there’s not much to do there. Every time I’ve been there, it was just to walk around aimlessly and shoot pictures of the nice streets, tall trees, and cute, old houses. This part of Nantou City is owned by the government. All the buildings, shops, restaurants, cafes, galleries, are owned and controlled by the government. Development is strictly controlled and carefully planned.

Until 2018 Zhongxing New Village was the seat of government of Taiwan Province, which is a completely different thing than the central government in Taipei, but we won’t get into that here. What you do want to know is that it’s a cool place to wander around, snap selfies with nice houses as background, and visit cafes and tea houses.

Qiushan Tea House

Qiushan is one of the nicest tea houses we’ve been to in Taiwan, and we been to many! We had Oolong tea with some traditional Chinese cookies. Everything was really good. The staff can pour the tea for you if you’re not familiar with the “serving tea techniques”. Both the interior and outdoor seating areas are very comfortable and zen-like. I love their big, heavy wooden tables. Highly recommended place. I’ll definitely go back! They have lots of nice pictures on their Instagram page.

Houses in Zhongxing New Village are different than the ones you usually see around Taiwan. Overall, I would say they look a bit more western.
