“What do you mean you’ve never heard of Yellow House Hostel in Hengchun?”
Since moving to Kenting National Park / Hengchun area in 2018, I’ve been hearing about that “super amazing place, wicked guesthouse, backpacker’s heaven, crazy-badass swimming pool, dope hostel, coolest B&B in Kenting…“

Whenever I hear such superlatives, I somehow automatically tend to dismiss it and just think “yeah, whatever”. But then, sometimes, the good claims add up, and I feel compelled to check it out, to see if the there is substance behind the hype.
Welcome to Yellow House!
For Yellow House Hostel, I realized I needed to take a look when some of my closest friends all had the same reaction, which was to say: “What!? You’ve never been to Yellow House!?”
Hostel, Pool, Bar, Good Vibes…
Yellow House is a lot of different things. It doesn’t fit the description of a traditional guesthouse or B&B. Their own description is a “residential club”. Mostly it’s a hostel with a really beautiful swimming pool, a massive sundeck with lounge chairs, a bar, and some very laid-back sitting areas where you could chill out for hours.
Interesting Design
It’s the kind of place you rarely see in Taiwan. My first reaction when I first visited was: “This is straight out of southern Thailand!” There is definitely a southeast asian / tropical feel to it, the kind you’d expect on Ko Tao. But not all of it. Some aspects of the design could actually be Japanese-inspired, but I’m not an architecture expert, so who knows.
Cynthia 小烏龜, (the owner), told me that her husband Kyle (also owner), designed the whole place from scratch. Kyle used to work as a background stage designer in Taipei. Hence the very interesting elements included in the whole place. Entire walls are painted with tropical scenes, traditional Japanese tatamis are boldly juxtaposed with construction cinder blocks, and industrial containers. I personally love the whole concept, and I’m amazed at the balance they were able to strike, with so many materials and style.
Plenty of room to sit down, relax, drink, pump iron…
What’s missing at most guesthouses in the Kenting area is “space outside your bedroom”. Unless you’re at a more upscale hotel or resort, you usually only get very little space outside your own room. That’s because most B&Bs around here were built in buildings that were originally family houses (in Hengchun anyway).
Yellow House has the advantage of being on a massive piece of land, and the owners maximized communal space. So there’s different areas where you can hang out. You can sit at the bar, the restaurant, play a foosball game, exercise at the gym (overlooking the pool), and even play darts.

Where is Yellow House?
Yellow House is not in downtown Hengchun, which for many, is a huge plus. For some people, Hengchun is too much of a city. For others, Kenting town and Nanwan are too touristy. If you want to escape both city and tourists, Yellow House is conveniently located between Hengchun and Nanwan, surrounded by rice fields. The grounds have been carefully “equipped” with beautiful plants and flowers, there’s quite a few palm trees, and you can see mountains in the distance. You’ll feel right at home if you like nature.

Good for families?
Would Yellow House Hostel in Hengchun be a good place for kids? Absolutely! With so much space to run around and play games, swim or play hide and seek, I’d imagine this place to be a kids heaven.
