Universities and Colleges in Taiwan


Are you thinking of studying in Taiwan? You can get an excellent education there if you speak Chinese. Some of these top universities even offer courses taught in English, so you could also attend one of these universities and colleges in Taiwan as an international student and learn Mandarin Chinese while you are there.

Doing so would give you the chance to absorb a whole new culture and to make friendships for life. Universities and colleges in Taiwan make great places to receive higher education.

National Taiwan University (NTU–Taipei)

NTU, a research university in Taipei, has a total of 33,000 students, including 17,000 undergraduates and 15,000 graduate students. Founded in 1928 under Japanese Colonial Rule, then called Taihoku Imperial University, it was renamed in 1945 when the Nationalist Chinese gained control of the island. Today NTU has 54 departments within 11 colleges, 103 graduate institutes, and four research centers. It is the most famous of the universities and colleges in Taiwan.

National Cheng Kung University (NCKU–Tainan)

NCKU, located in Tainan, is most noted for the fields of science, engineering, medicine, management, planning, and design. Its graduates are particularly appealing to Taiwanese companies. It currently has about 22,000 students in 9 colleges with 40 departments, 82 graduate institutes, and 55 research centers.

National Chengchi University (NCCU-Taipei)

NCCU is famous for humanities and social sciences, including languages and literature, law, communication and international affairs. It has 33 departments, 48 graduate institutes, and 5 master degree programs taught in English. It has over 15,000 students. If you like the liberal arts, then NCCU would make a good one of the universities and colleges of Taiwan for you.

National Tsing Hua University (NTHU – Hsinchu)

NTHU was first established in Beijing in 1911 as the Academy at Tsing Hua Garden, it now resides in Hsinchu City, in northern Taiwan. Although it offers programs in many disciplines, its greatest strengths lie in science and engineering. Among its alumni it boasts two Nobel laureates in physics, one Nobel laureate in chemistry, and one Wolf Prize winner in mathematics. It has around 11,700 students. None other of the universities and colleges in Taiwan can boast of such famous alumi.

National Central University (NCU – Jhongli)

NCU originated in Nanjing during the late Qing Dynasty in 1902. It was moved to Taiwan in 1968 in Miaoli but now resides in Jhongli. Though a comprehensive university, its leading schools are in geophysics and space science. One of its unique programs is in Hakka Studies. It is famous for creating the first plasma crystal in the world.

National Sun-Yat Sen University (NSYSU – Kaohsiung)

Opened in 1980, it is one of the fastest growing universities in Asia. Though smaller than many of the others listed, it makes up for size with natural resources, such as beach and wildlife. With 9, 547 students, it is made up of six colleges, including Marine Sciences. About 400 international students attend, and many courses are taught in English. This Taiwanese university is located in the city of Kaohsiung, in the southern part of the island.

National Chung Cheng University (NCCU – Chiayi)

Honoring the late President Chiang Kai-Shek, NCCU was established in 1986. A research-oriented university focusing on humanities, sciences, technology, law and management, it has about 8,500 students. NCCU is located in Chiayi.

Fu Jen Catholic University (Hsinjuang)

Founded by the the Holy See, Fu Jen has 9 colleges with 48 departments. Strong in graduate education, in addition to undergraduate degrees, it offers 46 master’s programs, 22 in-service master’s programs, and 11 Ph.D. programs. With 26,000 students, it has 120 sister schools around the world.

National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST–Taipei)

Established in 1974, NTUST focuses on engineering and management. With about 9300 students, they are split almost in half between graduate and undergraduate. In addition to four year programs, it also has two year and continuing education programs.

National Yang-Ming University (NYMU – Taipei)

Also founded in 1974, NYMU is a school of medicine, nursing, and dentistry. It provides health-care workers for the entire island.

As you can see, no matter what your major or your field, you can find many universities and colleges in Taiwan to choose from.
