Find budget hotels in Taipei City!

Taiwan’s capital isn’t like Bangkok! Cheap Taipei hostels can’t be found every 10 meters. Still, there are some decent ones. Here, I’m introducing you to the ones I’ve stayed at and felt comfortable. All of them are near Taipei train station and are within walking distance to most attractions in the old part of town. Find these hostels on a map.

Happy Family Hostel

Very close to the train station, basic but clean rooms, balcony with good views over the city, spacious living rooms, TV and air con. John Lee, the owner, is super friendly and will go out of his way to make sure you have everything you need.
Dorm/S/D NT300/400/600

Address: 2 Lane 56, Zhongshan N Rd, sec.1
MRT: Taipei Main Station
Tel: (02) 2375 3443

Taipei Hostel

This one claims to be the oldest guesthouse in the city. What makes it especially attractive is the fact that it’s only 2 minutes away from Shandao MRT station. Rooftop balcony, great place for socialising, free ADSL and kitchen. A bit loud sometimes.
Dorm/S/D NT300/500/550

Address: 6F, 11 Lane 5, Linsen N Rd
MRT: Shandao
Tel: (02) 2395 2950

World Scholar House

Not as close to the action as the two previous places, but still a decent option if a cheap hostel in Taipei is all you need.
Dorm/D NT350/650

Address: 8F, 2 Lane 38, Songjiang Rd
MRT: Zhongxiao Xinsheng
Tel: (02) 2541 8113

Chocolate Box Backpackers

Chocolate box is a hip, funky Taipei hostel situated in the hip, student-infested ShiDa area of Taipei. It’s clean, has a guest kitchen and offers free WiFi, free security camera-guarded lockers, free washing machines, air conditioning and more.  Proximity to the Guting MRT will give you access to anywhere you’ll want to go as it connects to two different subway lines. Also, that area is full of useful buses that will take you wherever the MRT doesn’t go.

Chocolate box is a cheap guesthouse in Taipei that offers double rooms or dorm accommodations, and offers weekly and monthly discounts (10% and 15%, respectively) if you plan in advance.

Beds from NT$500 (US$16)
2F, No.11-1, Pucheng St., Da-An District
MRT Guting Station

Taipei Sweet Potato Female Guest House

Sweet Potato, named after the owner’s experience with ignorant foreigners saying Taiwan is “shaped like a sweet potato”, is a female-only (or a couple that includes a female) hostel with cheap beds and rooms. Also, while most Taipei hostels are in the ShiDa University area, this one rests in Shilin, near the largest night market in the city and within striking distance of the hiking trails and mountains of northern Taipei.

This cheap hostel in Taipei is run by Jill, who can be contacted at 0975.030.407. Free WiFi, bicycle parking, washing machine, security lockers, a guest kitchen and other amenities are available.

Beds from NT$600 (US$20)
No.6, Ln. 68, Qiangang St., 4F., Shilin District
MRT Jiantan Station
0975.030.407

Visit HotelsCombined.com to find cheap rooms in Taipei.

Mudan House

Slightly more luxurious (and pricier) than the essentials-only Taipei hostels, Mudan House will satisfy those looking for a cheap but intimate experience. Also, it’s in historical Datong District, the oldest area in Taipei with a lot of interesting Qing Dynasty architecture. While this area used to be a bit remote, a newly-opened MRT line makes it easily accessible. It’s wonderfully decorated and clean, and the cozy rooms have a lot of character.

Free wireless and public-use laptops are available in the lobby, with wired internet free in rooms. Take note that Mudan offers no bunk or dorm-style accommodations, hence the higher price point.

Beds from NT$1300 (US$42)
196 ChangJi St. Datong District
MRT Daqiaotou Station
