Bars / Nightclubs / Night Markets

Taichung is rightfully known (in Taiwan anyway) for its nightlife. Whether that means sophisticated cocktail dens, friendly dive bars or night clubs, the city’s after-dark fun is just as electrifying as it ever was. Make sure to check my Taichung nightlife map at the bottom of this page.

Here’s a list of places you’ll want to consider to enjoy the nightlife in Taichung. I’ve included Facebook links so you can see what’s happening now.

Corner Cafe

The name is a bit misleading… it’s not a cafe, it’s a proper bar! Corner Cafe is one of my favorite places in Taichung to have few drinks. Next to People’s Park, nothing better than a cold beer or a shot after a walk along the Green Belt! If you only have time for one drink stop in TC, make it Corner Cafe, it’s the coolest nightlife spot to feel the energy of the downtown core!

Wine Not

As its name suggests, wine is big on the menu. Actually, that’s the only thing you’ll find at Wine Not Bar. Drinkers can pick a bottle from the shelves, or you can tell your preference to the wine tender. That’s what I did, and she got me a bottle of exactly the kind I like – a dark, bold, oaky Syrah!

Wine Not Bar offers a great wine experience in Taichung

All wines here are “natural” which implies they are not sprayed with pesticides or herbicides. It’s also supposed to mean they are made through traditional methods. Yes, they do contain sulfites, and yes, you will have a headache if you drink too much, although it might be milder than a full-blown migraine from too much commercial wine. Not 100% sure about that, as I seldom have headaches after drinking. I know, very lucky!

What I do know, is that I love Wine Not Bar, and I couldn’t recommend it more. GREAT place to have a good glass of wine, listen to music, and just chill with friends, or alone. Another pretty cool thing is you can bring in your own food / cheese / snacks /  Uber Eat.

Ardent Draft Beer

Ardent Draft Beer opened in August 2021, in a very central location, on Zhongming South Rd. The two main reasons why you want to check out Ardent are an amazing selection of draft beer, and outstanding, friendly service. They even have La Chouffe on tap! As far as I know, it’s the only place in Taiwan which offers this amazing golden nectar.

Beer on tap baby!

The owner, a Taiwanese girl, tends the bar and is able to hold a conversation in both English and Chinese for hours! Her passion for beer is palpable, she loves chatting and drinking, so if you’re feeling lonely and thirsty, get in that Uber ride straight to Ardent. Highly recommended!

Techno W Bistro

This classy bistro bar is famous for its seafood dishes and cocktails. One of the only fancy places of this kind in the city which is not in a big hotel. Definitely recommended for a first-date, gathering, birthday party. Great atmosphere, large bar, professional bartenders. Try the chicken wings (280$), they go down really well with a cold draft Heineken (250$). Yeah, not cheap, but worth it for the vibe.

Uptowner

Uptowner is well known for its badass American breakfast, but it’s also a proper sports bar. Some would say that it’s the only real American sports bar in Taichung. Great place to chill with friends. Good portion sizes. Conveniently located downtown, a stone’s throw away from Huamei Street and Sogo.

Address: 446, Zhongmei St, West District

Soho Street

Soho Street in downtown Taichung has four bars where expats hangout every night of the week and on weekends: Salut Pizza, Soho 7, PJ’s Cafe Irish Pub, and Venda’s Secret Bar. Great outdoor sitting area on a pedestrian alley, interesting folks, crazy parties sometimes.

Night Markets in Taichung

For a different kind of nightlife in Taichung, you can visit one of the many night markets in the city. The most popular one is definitely Fengchia Night Market, but you could also consider Yi Zhong Street Night Market if you are in the old part of Taichung, near the train station. Check the map below to find them.
