Which city has the best weather
Taichung, of course! And it's the main reason why I've lived here since 2000!
It is a fact well known by all Taiwanese (and foreigners who have been living here for a while) that the best weather in Taiwan is in Taichung city, in the western part of central Taiwan.
Take a good look at the following picture...
It shows the daily accumulated precipitation during typhoon Megi in October 2010. As you can see, the eastern part of Taiwan received massive amounts of rain, especially the northeast coast, around Keelung and Ilan where its purple.
Somehow, to my delight and amazement, my beautiful Taichung didn't even receive a single drop of rain! The sky above the city was clear, with stars and a bright moon. Trust me, Taichung has the best weather in Taiwan!
As typhoon Megi was raging next to Taiwan in the South China Sea, millions of Taiwanese from Taipei to Kaohsiung, Taoyuan to Taidong, were locked indoor, anxiously watching weather reports to see the damage caused by the storm.
Unbelievably, at the same time, the weather in Taichung was calm, dry and thousands of people gathered at People's Park to watch the annual outdoor Jazz Festival.
Not just during typhoons. Taichung has excellent weather year round!
The weather in Taichung is not only good during typhoons: the city has better weather than the rest of Taiwan throughout the year. Taichung has less rainy days, more sunshine and an average temperature that's more comfortable than the extremely hot south and the humid north.
So, if you've been wondering why Taichung is one of the most popular cities in Taiwan for teaching English and studying Chinese, you now have a part of the answer: the amazingly good weather!
Why does Taichung have the best weather in Taiwan?
Taichung residents like to say that their city is a much better place to live than Taipei because of the blue skies, few rainy days, and overall better air quality.
There must be more than one factor that makes Taichung the best place in Taiwan weather-wise, but I think the most important aspect is that the city is surrounded by hills and mountain and it's located next to the Taiwan Strait, which is not as wild as its big brother, the Pacific Ocean.
My girlfriend also has her own opinion about why Taichung has the best weather in Taiwan. She told me: "Taichung has such good weather because the god of the Sun lives above the city."

When people ask me: "Why have you been living in Taiwan for so long?" my answer usually mentions Taiwan's climate. The warm weather typical to our beautiful Formosa means you can wear shorts and sandals almost year-round. Read more about Taiwan's tropical climate.
