Visa Requirements

You Don't Need Much... It's A Breeze!

I hate having to do arrangements for visas. I actually hate doing preparations in general, especially when paperwork and fees are involved. That's probably why I like the visa-exempt permit so much. A normal Taiwan travel visa will require a fair amount of documentation. Not so for the visa-exempt permit.

You will need to:

  • have a passport valid for at least 6 months
  • *have an onward ticket
  • give an address where you will be staying in Taiwan - you can give a hotel name.

You won't need:

  • the usual 2 little photos (yeah!)
  • to fill a Taiwanese visa application form
  • to provide a personal bank statement
  • a letter explaining your purpose of visit
  • to pay any visa fee

*An onward ticket is a proof of a confirmed seat on a flight out of Taiwan. In my eight years of traveling in and out of the island, I've never been asked to show this at immigration. The one place where they may ask to see an onward ticket is at the check-in counter before you board your plane for Taiwan.

The permit is nothing more than a blue stamp. A custom official will hammer one in your passport at immigration when you get off the plane. It's very straightforward!

Can You Extend It?

No. A Taiwan travel visa exempt permit cannot be extended. (That would be nice actually!) It cannot be converted to visitor or resident visa either. It is only valid for 30 or 90 days. Period. When counting the days, do not include the day you landed in Taiwan. (Don't ask... that's just the way it is.)

If you overstay this permit for even a few hours, you will have to pay a fine and it will be more troublesome to travel to Taiwan in the future. I once made a mistake counting the days and ended up overstaying 8 hours.
