Dadun Taiwanese Restaurant

One of the very few restaurants in Taichung that serve authentic Taiwanese fares.

Those of you with an appreciation for Taiwanese food will simply fall in love with this restaurant. The wooden tables and stools set amidst a humble decor give the place a traditional and warm ambiance. It's a casual, neighborly place. Nothing too fancy here.

You have to order at the counter where you'll find the menu (Chinese only) written on pieces of wood on the wall. Don't worry if you can't read it, the owner's daughter is always around and can speak English quite well.

Their chicken rice box (jirou biandang) is amazing value for money at NT$85. And it's a real treat - best chicken in Taichung! It's served in an old-style metal box - the kind they used to serve on trains. The thing comes with a decent serving of rice and two kinds of vegetables (usually sweet potatoes and cabbage).

You should also try their three-cups tofu (sanbei doufu) NT$100. Served in a clay pot, this Taiwanese cuisine signature is a blend of rice wine, soy sauce and sesame oil added to generous chunks of tofu.

The house selection of alcohol is... Well, there's no selection. The only kind of beer on offer is Taiwan Beer. And it's not even the Jing Pai (Gold Medal), they only have the good old brown bottle. I asked the laoban niang (owner's wife) why they didn't have the Gold Medal and she said: "This is a real Taiwanese restaurant. Real Taiwanese only drink Taiwan Beer."
