Lotus Lake in Kaohsiung, Taiwan

Visit some of the best temples, pagodas
and pavilions in the southern city.

While touring Kaohsiung in Taiwan, you'll have to take at least half a day to check out Lotus Lake, in Zuoying - a suburban district 5km north of the city center. And that's the bare minimum. I spent an entire day in the area and I didn't have enough time to visit all the sights. See it on a map.

I hope you like to walk...

Most of the temples and pagodas (tons of them) are right by the lake, which is only 1.5km long and 500m wide. Walking is the best way to tour the area in my opinion - you get to have different perspectives and angles to photograph the buildings and structures.

How much time do you have?

If you don't have much time, you should consider starting your trip at the southwestern end of the pond, at Dragon-Tiger Pavilion and walk all the way to Confucius Temple (Taiwan's largest), at the northern tip. On the way up there, you'll pass Ciji Temple, Spring Autumn Pavilion, and Haian Temple.

After walking all this, if you still have some energy in your legs, have a look at the Old Wall of Fengshan County - it's just across from Shengli Rd, behind Dragon-Tiger Pavilion.

Getting To Lotus Lake from Kaohsiung, Taiwan

The fastest way to Zuoying and Lotus Lake is to catch a train from Kaohsiung station. They leave every fifteen minutes and the ride only takes about 5 minutes; NT$15.

When you exit Zuoying station, cross the avenue and head north on Shengli Rd - you'll see the lake on your right after about 200 meters.
