So you want to visit mainland China...
You probably know that, even though Hong Kong is part of China, in many ways, it is treated separately. For example, Hong Kong uses the HK dollar but China uses the yuan. That means if you want to visit the mainland, one of the ways you can get a travel visa if you are already in Hong Kong is to apply there. Don't expect that with admittance to Hong Kong you can also go to mainland China.
There are 2 places where you can get a Chinese visa in Hong Kong...
The first and the cheapest is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).
The second is China Travel Services, who will walk you through it. The information you'll find on this page is for getting a tourist Chinese visa in Hong Kong through MOFA.

Office hours are 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and from 14:00-17:00. The office is closed on Hong Kong holidays, which are 1/1; 2/13; 2/16; 4/2-6; 5/1; 5/21; 6/16; 7/1; 9/23; 10/1; 12/25; 12/27.
To get faster visa service, avoid Mondays and the first day after a Chinese holiday or festival. The best idea is: don't take your luggage along with you when going for your visa application because it isn't allowed past the security check leading into the visa office, and luggage storage is very sparse.

Requirements for the Chinese Tourist Visa
You will need these to obtain a visitor visa for China in Hong Kong:
- Passport that will not expire for at least 6 months. It must have at least 2 blank pages for visas.
- Completed Chinese visa application, V2011.
- Color passport photo taken in the past 6 months.
- Additional documents that might be required based on the type of China visa you are seeking. For tourists / travelers these could include: financial proof; a Chinese hotel booking; and a return flight ticket.
- If you are also going to Tibet, you will need an entry permit from the Tibetan Tourist Bureau. (Tel: 0086-891-6834313. Fax: 00868916834632)

It's also possible to get your Chinese visa in Hong Kong faster, but you'll have to pay more for that.
You really shouldn't miss going to Mainland China while on your visit to the Far East, especially since it's quite doable to get a visa for China in Hong Kong.
